Types of Sit-Stand Desks
Electric Sit-Stand Desks: The most popular option for commercial offices. These use electric motors in the legs to smoothly adjust the desk height at the touch of a button. Modern electric desks can move from sitting to standing height in around 10-15 seconds.
Desktop Converters: These sit on top of an existing desk and elevate the monitor and keyboard to standing height. They are a cost-effective solution for retrofitting existing offices but offer less desk space than a full sit-stand desk.
Manual/Crank Desks: These use a hand crank to adjust height. They are cheaper than electric models but slower and less convenient to adjust, which means they tend to be used less frequently.
Key Specifications
Height Range: A good electric sit-stand desk should adjust from approximately 640-650mm at the lowest (to accommodate wheelchair users and shorter individuals) to 1250-1300mm at the highest. This range covers the 5th to 95th percentile of the UK adult population.
Motor Type: Single-motor desks are adequate for lighter loads and everyday use. Dual-motor desks offer faster adjustment, higher weight capacity (typically 100-150kg), and smoother operation. For commercial environments, dual-motor is recommended.
Weight Capacity: Consider the total weight of monitors, arms, laptops, and accessories. Single-motor desks typically support 50-70kg, while dual-motor models handle 100-150kg.
Features to Look For
Memory Presets: The ability to save preferred sitting and standing heights for one-touch adjustment. Most quality desks offer 3-4 memory positions.
Anti-Collision: Sensors that detect obstructions and reverse the desk direction, protecting under-desk storage and chair arms.
Cable Management: Height-adjustable desks require flexible cable routing. Look for retractable cable trays, cable chains, and spiral cable wraps that accommodate the full range of desk movement.
Installation Considerations
Electric sit-stand desks require mains power at each workstation. Plan your electrical layout carefully, especially in bench configurations where multiple desks need power. Cable management is particularly important as cables must accommodate the full range of desk movement without tangling or pulling.
